Capirotada is one of the special desserts of Mexico. It is made during Easter. Each ingredient in this bread dessert has a specific meaning: the bread represents Jesus' body, the sugar syrup represents His blood, and the cinnamon stick represents the cross. It is made with stale bread, which symbolizes sharing.
Ingredients:
- 6 slices of stale bread
- 200 grams of brown sugar
- 250 ml of water
- 100 ml of corn syrup or honey
- Cinnamon
- Cloves
- 100 grams of walnuts
- 100 grams of raisins
- 50 grams of butter (melted)
- 50 grams of grated cheese
Instructions:
Step 1: Make the sugar syrup
Add water, brown sugar, corn syrup, cinnamon, and cloves to a saucepan and stir while boiling. Once the sugar has completely melted, take it off the stove and remove the cloves.
Step 2: Prepare the bread slices
You should toast the bread slices, but they should stay soft inside.
Step 3: Prepare the baking dish
Pour oil into the baking dish so the bread slices don't stick. Then, layer the bread slices in the dish. Sprinkle walnuts and raisins, pour a little sugar syrup, and repeat this process. Finally, pour the melted butter on top and add the cheese.
Step 4: Bake
Preheat the oven to 180°C and bake for 25-30 minutes until the top turns golden.
Step 5: Serve
Serve the Capirotada hot, and if you want, you can pour more syrup on top.
