Okonomiyaki is a popular Japanese pancake. The name means “grilled as you like” because you can choose your favorite ingredients. It is soft inside and crispy outside, with delicious toppings.
Okonomiyaki started in the Edo period (1603–1868) as a simple pancake called funoyaki. After World War II, people added more ingredients like cabbage, meat, and seafood. Today, it is a famous street food and home-cooked dish in Japan. There are two famous styles of Okonomiyaki: Osaka Style – All ingredients are mixed together before cooking. Hiroshima Style – Ingredients are layered and usually include noodles.

Okonomiyaki Recipe
Ingredients: 1 cup flour ½ cup dashi (or water) 1 egg 2 cups shredded cabbage ½ cup chopped green onions ½ cup seafood or pork (optional) 1 tbsp vegetable oil Okonomiyaki sauce (or Worcestershire sauce) Mayonnaise Bonito flakes (dried fish flakes) Nori (seaweed flakes)
Instructions: In a bowl, mix flour, dashi, and egg to make a batter. Add cabbage, green onions, and seafood or pork. Mix well. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Pour the mixture into the pan and shape into a round pancake. Cook for 4-5 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes. Drizzle with Okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise. Sprinkle bonito flakes and nori on top. Serve hot and enjoy!
