Mapo Tofu is a traditional food from the Sichuan (also written as Szechuan) region of China. It is made with soft tofu, ground meat, and spicy sauce. One special ingredient is Sichuan pepper, which gives a “tingling” feeling on your tongue. The sauce is red, spicy, and full of flavor.
The name “Mapo Tofu” has a fun meaning:

Long ago, in the 1800s, there was an old woman with small spots on her face (like freckles). She cooked a spicy tofu dish in a small restaurant in Chengdu. People loved her food and started to call it “Mapo’s Tofu.” That’s how the name was born!

Mapo Tofu Recipe (for 4 people)
Ingredients:
- 400g soft tofu
- 200g ground beef or lamb
- 2 tbsp doubanjiang (spicy bean paste)
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp Sichuan pepper (ground)
- 2 garlic cloves (chopped)
- 1 tsp ginger (grated)
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 cup water or meat broth
- 1 tsp cornstarch (mix with 2 tbsp water)
- Chopped green onions
- Optional: chili oil for more heat
- Prepare tofu: Cut tofu into cubes. Soak them in hot salty water for 5 minutes, then drain.
- Cook the meat: Heat oil in a pan. Add the ground meat and cook until brown.
- Add flavor: Add garlic, ginger, and doubanjiang. Stir for 1-2 minutes. Add soy sauce and Sichuan pepper.
- Add tofu: Carefully add tofu to the pan. Do not stir too much, just shake the pan a little.
- Add water: Pour water or broth. Let it cook for 5–7 minutes.
- Thicken sauce: Add the cornstarch mix to make the sauce a bit thick.
- Serve: Put chopped green onions on top. Serve hot with rice!
